i just realized how rediculous it is. was it the outcome of a meeting or the continuation of an industry standard?

not an actual transcript from said meeting:

Harvey: So the snooze, how long should it last?

Don: Well, the GE models all go with seven minutes...

Roger: Why not ten?

Sue: Our surveys and polling - well, the research - shows people like less than ten more than five.

Harvey: There you have GE's seven.

Don: Let's go with nine minutes... three squared is nine... and three is the magic number.
